A fire on an island in Green Lake was extinguished by firefighters from several Hancock County communities.

Brush Fire Damages an Island in Hancock County, Maine's Green Lake

The fire was reported just before noon on Monday afternoon, on an unnamed island in the Northeast Cove of Green Lake.

Emergency crews were dispatched with urgency because there are several known temporary campsites on the island.

No one was hurt in the incident that brought in mutual aid from several local towns.

Ellsworth firefighters secured a rescue boat from the Lamoine Fire Department as strong winds caused the fire to spread.

Before suppression efforts even began, the fast-moving brush fire had consumed nearly half of the island.

The boat was launched from the Nicolin Road boat landing, carrying firefighters, hand tools, and water equipment across the lake to the fire scene.

Ground crews from Ellsworth, Lamoine, and Mariaville Fire Departments attacked the perimeter of the fire.

While they worked, a Maine Forest Ranger and wildland specialists from the Acadia National Park Fire Team assisted with deep suppression.

Maine Fire Marshal to Investigate the Cause of a Fire on a Green Lake Island

Officials say all the hot spots were fully extinguished by 5:14 pm, and all personnel and equipment began returning to the shore.

There were no injuries, and no structures were threatened.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
