Anyone who enjoys boating or fishing loves the lack of ice on Maine's waterways, but there's one thing they have to remember to be safe.

This is one of my favorite times of year. The trees are starting to bud, I have daffodils coming up in my yard, and the pond near my house is open with no signs of ice.

But beneath that bright blue surface, with the sun glinting off the water, there's a secret that is too often forgotten in the excitement of Spring.

By later this week, meteorologists say temperatures may reach 60 degrees. Many people will wear shorts or even flip-flops.

And some will put their boats in the water and go for a ride, which is great, as long as they plan for the worst-case scenario, because it could happen pretty fast.

Mainers are Reminded that Water Temperature Doesn't Match Air Temperatures

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, water temperatures in April average 40 degrees, which can turn deadly very fast.

At 40 degrees Fahrenheit, cold shock and loss of motor skills can occur in 3 to 5 minutes.

The loss of motor skills will make it difficult, if not impossible, to keep yourself afloat.

Hypothermia will take 15 to 30 minutes, leading to unconsciousness and death.

Maine Warden Service Says a Little Planning Can Make Spring Trips on the Water Safer

So they advise dressing for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Dry and wetsuits are advised.

Always wear a life jacket to increase your chance of survival.

And file a float plan, letting someone know where you're going and when you plan to return.

Check the forecast before you go.

A little planning could be the difference between a fun day on the water and the last day of your life.
