Maine Man Faces Charges for a Guilford Assault that Left 1 Dead, 1 Critical

A Guilford man is in custody after an assault that killed one person and left another in critical condition.

Maine State Police Arrest a Guilford Man for Allegedly Assaulting Two People.

Maine State Police have identified the suspect as Ryan Carleton, 48, of Guilford.

The names of the victims have not been released, at this time.

Members of the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit just after 7:00 pm on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

Maine Police are Investigating a Double Assault in Guilford that Left 1 Dead

Deputies had responded to a report of an alleged assault on Pine Street in Guilford.

The deputies originally conducted a well-being check at 24 Pine Street, but moments later located a man and woman inside a neighboring residence at 26 Pine Street.

Both had sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital.

The male victim passed away on his way to the hospital, and the female victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The man's remains have been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy, to determine the cause and manner of death.

Officials are not releasing any information about a motive for the assaults or the weapon that was used.

Guilford, Maine Man Charged with Aggravated Assault for Attack on 2 People

Carleton is charged with aggravated assault but officials say those charges will be elevated pending an arraignment on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

Police believe this was an isolated incident and poses no danger to the public.

This case remains under investigation.
