
Donating Blood in 7 Maine Counties Just Got More Complicated
Residents of Maine's rural communities will soon find it less convenient to donate blood.
The increased expense of doing business is affecting everyone, including Maine's medical providers.
American Red Cross in Maine Changes the Availability of Blood Drives
The American Red Cross is the latest to feel the crunch, and so they've decided to discontinue mobile blood drives in parts of seven Maine counties.

Red Cross officials say rising operational costs and logistical challenges have necessitated the change, which will take place in July, 2026.
Seven Maine Counties Will See a Reduction in Available Blood Drives
The regions of Maine impacted by the American Red Cross decision will include:
- Aroostook County
- Hancock County
- Penobscot County
- Piscataquis County
- Somerset County
- Waldo County
- Washington County
It's important to note that blood drives will only cease in some portions of each county, but not for the entire region.
Some Maine Red Cross Employees Will Be Affected By the Reduction in Blood Drives
The reduction in mobile blood drives will also impact 13 American Red Cross employees. Some of those workers will be offered transfers to fixed-site operations.
In a media release, Red Cross officials emphasized that the goal of this change is to use resources more efficiently, while maintaining a consistent, safe blood supply for hospitals.
This announcement comes on the heels of a plea from the American Red Cross for donors because the fierce winter weather has prompted cancellations and a shortage in the blood supply.
