A South Berwick man is charged with murder for the shooting death of his girlfriend, which he says was an accident.

Police Say the Berwick Shooting Suspect is the One Who Called 911

Jeremiah Godfrey, 43, is accused of killing Sherri Sweet, 37, in South Berwick, but he says it wasn't intentional.

It was just before 9:00 Saturday night, March 22nd, when Godfrey made a 911 call to the South Berwick Police Department. Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Aaron Turcotte says Godfrey allegedly told authorities that he had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend, Sherri Sweet, at 48 Brattle Street when the shooting happened.

Godfrey Says the Couple Struggled Over a Gun and She Was Wounded

Godfrey allegedly said Sweet was unresponsive after sustaining a gunshot wound while the couple struggled over a gun. When First Responders arrived on the scene, Sweet was transported to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. She was pronounced deceased at 10:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 23rd.

The New Hampshire Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy and determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound and the manner of death was homicide.

Jeremiah Godfrey was arrested on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, charged with murder, and taken to the York County Jail.
