You’re Breaking a Maine Law if You Don’t Do This While Driving
While Maine has plenty of laws that exist for seemingly no apparent reason, this one serves an important purpose—your safety is at risk!

We get it—there are so many rules when it comes to driving! That’s exactly why schools and courses are dedicated to teaching people how to drive—there’s a lot to learn!
Even if you never attended a driving school or course when you first learned to drive, you should have been provided with all the rules and regulations necessary before hitting the road.
While many traffic rules help maintain order and keep things running smoothly, the one we’re discussing today is especially important. It’s not just about being courteous—it’s about keeping yourself, other drivers, and pedestrians safe from potential accidents.
Okay, with that established, which law are we talking about today that you may not have necessarily known about?
In Maine, according to our legislation, drivers must turn on their headlights from sunset to sunrise, whenever visibility is less than 1,000 feet due to weather conditions like rain, fog, or snow, and anytime windshield wipers are in constant use.
However, this rule regarding headlight use in unfavorable weather conditions does not apply to parked vehicles off the main road.
Many states have similar laws, though specific requirements may vary. It’s always a good idea to check local regulations to stay safe and compliant.
So, there you have it! If you don’t use your headlights during unfavorable weather conditions, such as rain or snow, you’re breaking the law.
