Hammond Lumber Company is about to expand its footprint with the acquisition of Ware-Butler Building Supply.

Hammond Lumber Company Will Acquire 15 Ware-Butler Locations in Maine

It's a significant step for the company that already has 22 locations in Maine and New Hampshire. Once the sale is complete, that number will grow to 34 locations for Hammond Lumber Company.

The transaction includes a total of 15 Ware-Butler locations in Maine:

  • Corinth
  • Dixfield
  • Dover-Foxcroft
  • Gorham
  • Greenville
  • Kingfield
  • Livermore Falls
  • Madison (Route 201 and Main Street locations)
  • Mexico
  • Orrington
  • Palmyra
  • Stillwater (Old Town)
  • Waterville
  • West Enfield

Three of those locations will be merged, with the Dixfield, Greenville, and Orrington locations being consolidated into nearby Hammond Lumber branches.

Also included in the acquisition are two metal roofing production lines under the Peak Metals brand, in Stillwater and Palmyra.

Ware-Butler Employees in Maine Will Be Offered Jobs with Hammond Lumber

There's good news for Ware-Butler workers who are being offered continued employment with Hammond Lumber Company's operations, including relocation to nearby branches.

Ware-Butler Building Supply was founded in 1925 and was acquired by Pleasant River Lumber in 2020. Two spruce sawmills in Dover-Foxcroft and Enfield, which are not part of the sale to Hammond Lumber Company, will continue to operate under Pleasant River Lumber.

Hammond Lumber Company was founded in 1953 by Skip and Verna Hammond, with a single sawmill in Belgrade, Maine. Still family-owned, it's one of the largest independent lumber and building material retailers in the northeast.

Sale of Maine's Ware-Butler Building Supply Will Be Finalized at the End of the Month

The purchase of Ware-Butler will officially close on July 31, 2025.

At that point, Hammond Lumber Company officials say the newly expanded company will employ over 1,200 people across Maine and New Hampshire and is projected to generate more than $500 million in annual sales.
