The delay of SNAP benefits in November will send Maine residents to food pantries, some for the first time.

Maine Food Pantries Bracing for Influx of SNAP Recipients

Earlier this month, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that the delivery of November's SNAP benefits would be delayed due to the Federal government shutdown.

Nearly 170,000 Maine residents receive SNAP benefits to help buy their food each month. The average monthly benefit for a family of four is $572.00.

Nearly 75% of those households have at least one working adult, while many others are elderly residents or those with disabilities. And I'm guessing many have never needed the food pantry in their communities.

The State of Maine's website is a great resource. Click your county to see the list of food pantries in your area:

While this is a great starting point, it's a good idea to also check with 211 Maine. A service of the United Way, this is an easy way to learn about available resources. Call 211 to speak with an operator who will ask for your zip code and then list available resources closest to your location.

Maine Communities Will Work Together to Support SNAP Recipients

It's going to take entire communities to get through this shutdown. If you're in need, don't be afraid to reach out. There are many people in the same situation, and plenty of organizations that want to help.

And for anyone who can, please help the food pantries. Consider making a financial donation to a pantry or donating some non-perishable food items. Set up a collection in your office to donate to the food cupboard.

Some Maine restaurants are helping out by offering free or discounted meals.

Helping others through tough times is the Maine way.
