A Man From Ecuador Died Saturday After His Canoe Capsized
Pedro Quizhpi, 50, of Ecuador, died on Saturday morning while he was boating with three other people in Waterford.
The Maine Warden Service says four men had been out on Papoose Pond in three canoes when one of the canoes capsized, throwing two people into the water. The other boaters got the two men to shore, but Quizhpi was unresponsive.
Someone called for help at approximately 8:30, while CPR was administered to revive Quizhpi. Despite their best efforts, the 50-year-old died at the scene before an Oxford Deputy Sheriff arrived.
Maine Officials Say Witnesses to the Papoose Pond Accident Left Before Help Arrived
The second man in the capsized canoe says it flipped unexpectedly as they traveled across the pond. He says he can't remember what happened after the canoe flipped, but that the witnesses in the other canoe brought the men to shore.

Game Wardens say witnesses who helped the canoeists had left the area before the deputy arrived. They're now hoping to talk to them to get a clearer picture of what happened.
Scarborough Police stopped one of two vehicles that had left the scene before the deputy arrived, but it was determined the witnesses were not in it.
The second vehicle has not been located.
