Out of 364 Division I men’s college basketball programs evaluated, the University of Maine Black Bears ranked 350th in College Basketball Review’s all-time rankings.
The publication noted Maine’s long NCAA Tournament drought, challenges recruiting due to its location, and lack of postseason appearances beyond the conference tournament, while also highlighting America East Player of the Year winners Rufus Harris (1980) and Jeff Cross (1983).
College Basketball Review points to Rick Carlisle as the biggest name in Maine basketball history.
Noting Carlisle’s NBA playing career and status as one of the league’s top coaches after starting his college career with the Black Bears. They also highlight Maine’s recent 20-win season in 2024–25 as a rare bright spot, pointing out the program has only topped that mark once before, in 1999–2000, and hasn’t consistently found success over nearly a century.

And there you have it! Of the 364 Division I schools eligible for this ranking, College Basketball Review placed the University of Maine men’s program at 350th.
