Ahead of Maine’s 2026 Senate race, which could have major national implications, the state’s governor has announced her bid with a clear promise.
Ahead of the 2026 election season, Democratic Governor Janet Mills, first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, is constitutionally limited to two consecutive terms and cannot run again.

Mills has announced that she is running for the U.S. Senate, presenting herself as the Democrat most capable of defeating Republican Senator Susan Collins.
She told NBC News that she does not plan to serve more than one term, emphasizing her experience in winning statewide elections.

Mills says she’s proven she can deliver progress for Maine on health care, clean energy, education, and more, and she’s ready to fight for those issues in the U.S. Senate.
While backed by top Democrats like Chuck Schumer, she will still face a competitive primary against candidates such as Graham Platner and Jordan Wood, who plan to stay in the race.

And there you have it. As part of her campaign, she pledged that if elected in 2026, she would serve only one term as senator.
