It hasn't exactly been a great few years for the Family Dollar brand.

The chain announced in 2024 that it would begin the process of closing more than 1,000 locations across the nation.

Many of those stores were underperforming but others simply had lease or real estate deals that were set to expire.

The company needed to cut costs and save money and it would be cheaper to simply close the store than continue operations.

That has led to a more than a dozen Family Dollar locations across Maine to close over the past two years.

Those closures included the store in Bangor, Maine, at 89 State Street, which spent the last couple of months liquidating inventory.

It's unclear whether the decision to close the Bangor, Maine, store was based on a lease renewal or the store itself underperforming.

Similar to the case in Rockland, it was a lease decision.

Several other Family Dollar locations across Maine have lease agreements nearing the point where the chain will have to decide to renew or close the store.

Family Dollar will also take a closer look at underperforming stores as well as costs attributed to labor to determine if some locations in Maine are viable moving forward.
