Work began earlier this week on a project that will reconfigure the area of Pickering Square by the new Transit Center in Bangor.

According to the folks with Downtown Bangor, this Pickering Square Project will round out a group of projects aimed at connecting different spots within the downtown area together with a more user-friendly theme.

"This will also be the final leg of a redesign process that began years ago with the redevelopment of West Market Square, then Merchants Plaza, the Pickering Square Garage, and the Transit Center."

"The continuity and visitor experience will be transformed in what is the front door experience for many visitors coming downtown via the waterfront, the public transit system, and parking in the garage."

Some of the features that will be installed will include 2 informational kiosks at either end of the square, some bistro seating, a swinging bench, and decorative fencing. There will also be some sections of covered seating, and a couple of new art installations, along with some new plant features.

There will also be some in-ground LED lighting throughout the area, which will lead people to some of the features around the space.

The plans came together after many design workshops and public forums asking for input on what should be done with the remaining triangle of green space after the new Transit Center was installed in 2022.

Bangor City Engineer, John Theriault said that most of the public feedback provided indicated that people really wanted to keep a great deal of the space green, wanted a place to display some art, and also a place for performances, such as a small stage or some hardscaped area. There will also be spaces to gather along the grounds.

The Engineering Department estimates that the project will be ongoing through the summer and possibly into the fall of 2024.
