Hancock County Residents Arrested With 50K In Heroin

A couple from Hancock is facing drug trafficking charges after police seized more than $50,000 in heroin.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says a vehicle driven by 35-year-old William Smeal of Hancock was stopped on High Street in Ellsworth at around 7:30 Wednesday morning. Also in the Mercedes was Smeal's girlfriend, 21-year-old Savanna Adams when officials served a search warrant and found more than 100 grams of bulk heroin and $1,200 in cash hidden inside. Smeal and Adams were arrested and charged with Aggravated Trafficking in Heroin and taken to the Hancock County Jail.

MDEA agents and Hancock County Sheriff's Deputies then obtained a second search warrant for the couple's home on Deerfield Drive in Hancock. Seized in that search was another 40 grams of heroin. Officials say the street value of the drugs is more than $50,000. The traffic stop was the result of a long-term investigation that alerted MDEA agents to Smeal and Adams leaving the state the previous day. Agents followed the car back to the area and seized the drugs they say were destined for retail sale in Hancock and Washington counties.
