Governor Janet Mills has ordered all state office closed today, as sleet and freezing rain make driving conditions challenging.

"I urge Maine people to exercise extreme caution if they must be on the roads," Mills said in a media release, "and to give our road crews and first responders plenty of room as they work to keep us safe."

So, today is not the day to renew your driver's license or drop by DHHS. As a matter of fact, it's a great day to stay home, if you possibly can. If you have an appointment or class, check out our cancellation list first and, if you don't see your destination listed, maybe give them a call before you head out.

If you do have to go out, take it slow and give yourself plenty of room to stop. Bare pavement isn't necessarily safe, because there's a lot of black ice today. Parking lots are especially treacherous, so don't try running into the building. (unless you want to get some time off to recover from your fall) Take it slow, be safe, and remember that the groundhog said spring will be early this year. Just...not...yet.
