This Saturday, Maine's homeless veterans can catch a free ride to Togus for a day of complimentary services, products, and information.

Saturday is the 21st annual Homeless Veteran Stand Down, which is a full day of services and resources for veterans that are either homeless or in transitional housing.  'Stand Down' is a military term that means falling back to a safe place. And that will be the vibe on Saturday, as volunteers work to show these real American heroes that they are important and deserving of special treatment.

Free services being offered between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at VA Togus, 1 VA Center, Augusta, will include the handing out of personal care items for Veterans, to include boots, clothing, food and drinks. Attendees can get free haircuts and flu shots, and will find information about employment and training resources, food stamp and MaineCare applications, health care services, housing resources, and legal services. In addition, there will be optional Hep C and HIV testing available, as well as a tax advocate, Veteran benefits information, and women's services. All services at the Stand Down are free to homeless Veterans.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is providing free transportation to and from the event, from a variety of locations. The van from Bangor will leave at 7:15 Saturday morning from the Bangor Area Shelter. Find the complete list on the Maine Department of Labor's website.
