Did You Know There Are Some Rules For Political Sign Placement?

First off, before someone has a near coronary thinking this applies to the signs in their yard, you're all set. Outside of the boundaries of good taste, you can place just about anything on Earth on the side of the road in front of your house. Provided it's your property. But what about medians, and public roads, and that sort of thing?

I was today-years-old when I learned that there are actually a few basic guidelines that are set forth by the Maine DOT. If you drive down any given road in Maine, you'd think that there practically no laws of any kind regarding these signs. They're so abundant, that I always assumed the only real rule was to pick it up after election.

And that one is true. But did you also know, that all signs are supposed to display the name and address of the person/organization that placed the sign? Or that you can't put signs in the middle of a rotary? That's not to say it doesn't happen, because we all know it does. You also can't place them on trees or utility poles. But again, it does happen.

According to WABI-TV5, they also must include the date they're posted. There's only two, six-week windows that people are supposed to have them on public property, anytime before or after that, and the sign can be removed. Any signs the DOT removes, they make a concerted effort to get the sign back to it's rightful owner.

As I always say, I couldn't care less what anyone's politics are. I try to be as apolitical as possible. But I think we all can admit, that by the time November 4th rolls around, I don't care if I see another Trump or Biden or Gideon or Collins sign ever again. I can't wait to get back to being just good old, plain old Maine.
