Well, it's that time of year again here in good old Bangor, Maine. Tourney time is upon us once again. The sound of popcorn popping,  the red hot dogs steaming, and Maine's finest high school athletes getting ready to show eager fans their stuff. Class A, Class B....none of that really matters in the spirit of competition.

Today I got wondering, who is the winning-est high school basketball team of all time in Maine?

If you glance at the list I started with from the Maine's Principal Association, it's hard to tell. There's rarely many consecutive winners. There's been dozens in Class A-D over the years, going back to the beginning in 1922. But I have isolated it to the Top 5.

No surprise to locals around these parts, but our very own Bangor High School takes the top spot in the list of all time winners. Since 1923, they have taken the title a total of 12 times....1923, 1947, 1955, 1959, 1993,1995,1996, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, and 2011. That's a lot of banners hanging in their gym. Definitely a testament to great coaching, and outstanding young athletes trying their hardest.

Jonesport Beals High School in Jonesport takes the number two spot with 11 state titles under their belt. In addition, according to MaineAnEncyclopedia.com,  they also have the second highest number of consecutive State Titles. They did it five times in a row 1970-1974. They've only outdone by Valley High School with six titles, 1998-2003.

Next in line, and actually tied with Jonesport Beals is South Portland High School. They have been on the scene since the beginning. Literally. They were the very first high school basketball state champion in 1922. And continued doing very well in the late 1920's through the early 1930's. Then they took a long hiatus from victory from victory and have had spotty luck since.

Portland private school Cheverus, has also had decent luck over the years with 9 state titles to their name. And just the next town over, not to be completely outdone, Falmouth High School wraps up the Top 5 with their very respectable 8 titles.

Many high schools have won state titles in Maine over the years. Granted, not a lot of them have set up the kind of basketball dynasty that some schools have, but that's fine. Like our parents taught us when we were kids, it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game. But hey, let's face it...winning doesn't suck.
