Warden Service divers located the body of a Massachusetts man who disappeared after capsizing his kayak in the Stillwater River near the Steam Plant parking lot in Orono.

Mohammed Jamal, 37, was on the river in a kayak with his 7-year-old niece when the craft overturned at around 6:30 Tuesday evening. The girl, who doesn't know how to swim, was wearing a life jacket and floated until she could be rescued. But Jamal, who officials say did know how to swim, never resurfaced. He was not wearing a life jacket. Jamal's wife and the girl's mother were watching from the shore.

Divers found Jamal's body in about 13 feet of water Wednesday morning and turned it over to the State Medical Examiner's office.

Wardens advise anyone getting into a watercraft to wear a life jacket. Heavy clothing and/or very cold water can cause even the most experienced swimmer to drown.
