Beach Goers and Boaters Warned Of Hazardous Water Temps

The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard warning for the coastline of Hancock and Washington counties.

It's going to be a beautiful day and a perfect summer weekend, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80's. But the NWS says the warm air can be deceiving for folks on or near the water. Despite the balmy atmosphere, the water temperature is still only in the mid 40's, prompting the beach hazard warning that includes Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Bucksport, Castine, Eastport, Machias, Cherryfield, and other coastal Hancock and Washington County communities. Acadia National Park, Schoodic Point Peninsula, Lamoine Beach, Roque Bluffs State Park, and Quoddy Head State Park are also covered by the warning.

Officials say anyone who's on a boat or paddlecraft should use caution and be prepared for possibly hypothermia if they go into the water. Proper dress for very cold water temperatures is necessary and a knowledge of how to perform rescues.

A Beach Hazards statement is issued on days when a significant number of boats, canoes, and kayaks are expected to be out on Maine's waterways, and when the warm air temperatures could cause people to underestimate the danger of the cold water. Boaters are reminded to always wear their life jacket and be aware of current conditions.
