Winter will show up whether we like it or not.
There's no escape. Every now and then, snow makes a super late appearance, and you almost let yourself wonder for just a minute if this is going to be a nice, slow year for snow. But usually, sometime in December or January, we start getting pummeled. But almost everyone gets a little giddy over the first snow of the year.
It doesn't always amount to much, except maybe a few dozen extra fender-benders with those folks who forgot how to drive since last winter. It's always like they're just seeing snow for the first time. But aside from that, I think those first flakes get people in the seasonal spirit and make for some good cheer. Until March, then we just want it over.
So, when should Bangor see its first white lawn?
First, let's look at the first dates of the last several years. But if we look here, it gives us a solid history of the first snowfall in Bangor:
- November 26, 2016
- December 9, 2017
- November 10, 2018
- November 11, 2019
- November 3, 2020
- November 27, 2021
Given that in the last few years, the earliest snowfall was November 10th, and the latest was December 9th, one might surmise that a fairly likely date would be the week of Thanksgiving this year. So right around November 23rd? Look, it's kinda hard to pinpoint it down entirely. Otherwise, we'd all be meteorologists.
But it's a fairly safe bet. On the other hand, my weather app is showing the possibility of temps still in the 60s right into the first week of November, so we've got some freezing to do, hahaha. But right around the 23rd of November is as close as any weather person is going to get you. Let's start taking bets now, shall we?
