Bangor's Daniel Ford-Coates Died of a Gunshot Wound in April
Bangor Police were called to a Highland Avenue home before dawn on an April morning for a report of an incident. When officers arrived, they found Daniel Ford-Coates, 24, who had sustained a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital by the Bangor Fire Department, where he died of his injuries. A post-mortem examination at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined it was homicide.
After an investigation, Ford-Coates girlfriend, Babin, was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
Police Say the Bangor Woman Thought the Gun Was Unloaded
The shooting was not intentional, according to court documents. WGME-TV reports that Babin took Ford-Coates' handgun from his bedroom without the magazine to scare him and two others. She handled it in a way that would suggest it wasn't loaded before holding it to Ford-Coates' head as a joke. But when she pulled the trigger, one round fired.
Prosecutors accused her of throwing the gun in a nearby stream and changing her clothes before returning to the apartment and calling 911. She addressed the victim's family and friends during the trial and took full responsibility for what she'd done.
