A man was killed during an armed confrontation, following a high-speed chase with police that ended when he crashed into a cruiser.

44-year-old Jason Gora of Auburn first came to the attention of law enforcement when he was reported missing. The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office says they were told he was reported to be armed and in a compromised state of mind.

It was around 8:00 Sunday night when deputies located Gora traveling outbound on Minot Avenue in Auburn and tried to get him to pull over. He refused to stop, leading police on a chase into Minot. A Mechanic Falls police officer offered assistance, stopping in the parking lot of the Minot Post Office until Gora approached in his Jeep Wrangler. As Gora approached, he crossed the centerline and struck the cruiser, totaling it. Gora then got out of his vehicle and engaged in an armed confrontation with police, during which he was shot and killed.

The officers involved in the incident were Sergeant Jon Guay, Deputy Matthew Noyes, and Deputy Darian Nadeau of the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office, and Sergeant Alfred Daigle of the Mechanic Falls Police Department. All the officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Attorney General's office, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
