Maine Lawmakers Pass Ban On Handheld Cell Phones While Driving

Look, it was probably going to happen sooner or later. And I guaran-freaking-tee you, this will turn into one of those awful situations that are needlessly political. Yet, here we are. The Maine legislature has voted to ban the use of handheld cell phones while operating a vehicle. We will join 16 other states, as well as Washington DC, in banning the use of hand-held cell phones behind the wheel.

We already banned texting and driving, and Maine also has a "distracted driving" law, but that falls just short of a full-on ban. Until now. The bill has yet to be signed into law by Gov. Mills, but it will likely go into effect. The proposed fine would be $75, and $150 for each additional violation in a three year period, according to WABI - TV5.

In my opinion, this definitely has the potential to not only save lives, but likely reduce non-fatal accidents and fender-benders. I totally get why some people will undoubtedly feel that this infringes upon their rights, but I also guarantee you that same person has likely complained about "some jerk on their cell phone" in traffic. So this may benefit you from time to time.

There are plenty of people out there who don't wear helmets, and will forever scoff at putting on a seat belt. But that's your choice. If you get hurt, that's on you. But if you, or someone you loved was hurt by someone talking and driving, you might just be glad this law exists. Especially if it prevents that accident from ever happening in the first place.
