Camping in Maine is a Family Tradition For Me

Camping is something I know well. I grew up camping almost every weekend, and traveled the country with my family. We had a pop-up camper, a lot like this one, that we took everywhere, including a trip to California and back when I was 12.

Sometimes, instead of visiting other states, we would just find new places in Maine to explore. It's the best place for camping because you can go right outside an urban area like Bangor and find a place to get lost in the woods.

Maine Has More Than 170 Licensed Campgrounds, from Rural to Resorts

Maine has an incredible number of campgrounds for one state. Over 175 licensed campgrounds offer a variety of amenities for campers, from truly rural and primitive experiences to resorts so plush you might just forget you're supposed to be 'camping.'

I loved roughing it in my 20s, when a boyfriend and I hiked Gulf Hagas, and then stayed in a tent with our food in a backpack suspended from a tree so the bears wouldn't get it.

These days, however, I lean more toward the new 'glamping' trend, with a beautiful tent, wood floor, and an actual bed. Guess I'm getting older.
