69-Year-Old Maine Man Was Killed When He Crashed His Snowmobile

An Andover man is dead after crashing his snowmobile into some trees.

Mark Latti with the Maine Warden Service says Frank Clifford, 69, of Andover died in the crash.

How Did the Crash Happen?

Clifford was traveling north on his Ski Doo 850 Enduro snowmobile on ITS 89 in Lang Township, with some friends. His sled drifted across the center of the trail and then crashed into the woods on the left side of the trail, where he collided with several trees.

Game Wardens and members of the Rangeley Fire Department responded to the scene and found Mr. Clifford deceased alongside the trees and near his crashed snowmobile. He was transported out of the woods and taken to Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington where a state medical examiner will work to determine how he died.

What Caused the Crash?

Officials say the initial investigation suggests that speed was a potential factor in the crash. Mr. Clifford was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
