The Maine Science Festival will feature everything from panel discussions on a variety of topics, to student projects, to hands-on displays March 18-20 in Bangor.

I'll admit, I've always had mixed feelings about science. While it was my worst subject in school, it's also one of my greatest fascinations. I marvel at space travel and wish that I, too, could travel to the cosmos and view the Earth from space. One of my favorite college professors was a physics wiz who used dramatic demonstrations to entertain and educate at the same time. However, my grades didn't reflect my interest, as I got lost in the more complicated principles.

So, I'm very interested in going to see what's being offered at the Maine Science Festival in Bangor this weekend. I mean, I can explore all those interesting science subjects without worrying about being tested on it later! And a few of the panel discussions really caught my attention, including one on Saturday that will explain the chemical processes that cause opioid addiction. The presentation will also include a doctor to talk about the medical aspects of it, and a recovering addict to explain its emotional effects.

Another panel discussion will be less serious and very entertaining, I think, as it focuses on the scientific explanations for what makes us capable of improvisation. And there will be actors on-hand to demonstrate. Fun!

The Maine Science Festival runs from Friday through Sunday, and will include events at the Cross Insurance Center, in Downtown Bangor, and a keynote address at the Hampden Academy Performing Arts Center. Author, Statistician, and founder of 'Five Thirty-Eight,' Nate Silver will speak about his work in politics and sports, and how he uses math in journalism.
