Before entering the race to become, and eventually win as, New York City’s next mayor, the mayor-elect graduated from one of Maine’s most prestigious schools.

One of the most closely watched races of the 2025 election season was the New York City mayoral race between Andrew Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa, and the eventual winner, Zohran Mamdani.

This year’s mayoral election saw the highest voter turnout in decades, driven largely by a surge in young voter registration.

Mamdani will take office on January 1st, 2026, becoming New York City’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest since 1892.

Bowdoin College took to social media to congratulate alumnus Zohran Mamdani, Class of 2014, on being elected the 111th mayor of New York City.

The college added that Bowdoin has a long tradition of graduates who have gone on to serve as mayors, governors, legislators, ambassadors, and judges.

During his time at Bowdoin College, Mamdani co-founded the school’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.

Mamdani graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies.
