Maine Police Say 2 Were Hurt in Another Wrong-Way on I-95 Crash
Police are investigating another highway crash that was caused by someone traveling against traffic.
Who Was Involved in This Crash?
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says Troopers learned of a head-on crash on the southbound side of I-95 in Augusta, near mile marker 112, at approximately 8:17 Saturday night. Crews rushed to the scene and found two people who were injured in the crash.
Both Sarah Lincoln, 45, of Winthrop and Julia Kronstrand, 18, of Litchfield were transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta. Kronstrand suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries while Lincoln's injuries were minor.
What Happened?
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash determined that Lincoln had entered the interstate, traveling north in the southbound lane, and struck a vehicle driven by Kronstrand. Officials say Lincoln was suspected of driving under the influence. So far, no charges have been filed, but the crash remains under investigation.
Where Were the Other Two Crashes?
This is the third instance of a crash in Maine being caused by a wrong-way driver in the past month. On June 2nd, a Maine State Police Trooper was able to disable a vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver in the Bowdoinham area by using a PIT maneuver. No one was hurt in that incident.
On May 29th, Troopers responded to a head-on crash on I-295 in Falmouth. Both drivers died in that crash and a passenger in the second vehicle was taken to a local hospital. Officials say a 72-year-old woman entered the interstate, traveling in the wrong direction, when she hit the other vehicle. Police were looking into whether the woman had suffered a medical event prior to the crash.
