The first half of the week will be downright frigid, as forecasters warn of brutally cold arctic air settling into Maine.

The National Weather Service is forecasting bitter cold to start the week. Monday features a mix of sun and clouds, with temps falling throughout the day. By the evening hours, temps in the Bangor area are expected to plummet to near -6, with wind chill values near -20. Throughout the day Tuesday temps top out near 2 above, with wind chill values near -22.

Dangerously cold temps are expected in northern areas of the state. In Caribou, temps overnight into Tuesday are expected to bottom out near -15, with wind chill values near -30. High temps Tuesday are expected to remain below zero throughout the day. Tuesday night, temperatures are expected to once again fall well below zero, near -17, with wind chill values near -27.

Temps will begin to rebound Wednesday with highs near 26 degrees. More seasonable temps return Thursday, with highs near 30.
