Lincoln County officials say an Alna man died when his car landed on its roof in the river.

Alna, Maine Man Dies in Whitefield Crash

The deceased has been identified as Chris L. Conary, 67, of Alna.

Mr. Conary was traveling on the Townhouse Road in Whitefield when the crash happened before noon on Thursday morning.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says an initial investigation suggests that Conary's 2006 Toyota Camry traveled through the intersection with Pittston Road without stopping.

The car struck a snowbank, which caused it to go airborne. It hit an unoccupied parked vehicle, which made the Camry flip onto its roof, landing in the river that runs beside the road. The river is about 5 feet deep in that location.

Officials say firefighters were unable to extract Mr. Conary from the vehicle. He was traveling alone and had his seatbelt on. The airbags did deploy in the car.

Mr. Conary died in the crash.

Whitefield, Maine Fatal Crash May Have Followed Medical Event

Investigators are now looking into whether Conary may have experienced a medical event prior to the crash.
