One teenager was killed and another injured when their snowmobile crashed in Washburn.

Maine Teen Killed in a Snowmobile Crash in Washburn

The names of the teens have not been released, but officials say a 17-year-old female died in the Aroostook County crash, while a 17-year-old male sustained numerous injuries.

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss says it was a little after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday when the crash happened.

A 17-year-old male was driving a snowmobile down Story Street in Washburn with a 17-year-old female as his passenger. He was traveling at a high rate of speed when he came upon a 90-degree turn in the road.

An initial investigation indicates the driver was going too fast to make the turn and struck a curb, causing the snowmobile to flip over.

Maine Teens Struck a House After Being Thrown From a Snowmobile in Washburn

Both teens were ejected from the sled and they struck the side of a house. Officials say the driver and passenger were wearing helmets.

The female was killed instantly, and the male sustained multiple injuries. He was initially taken to CARY Medical Center, but has since been transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Cener in Bangor.

This incident remains under investigation.
