Maine State Police Say a 1-Year-Old Child on Vinalhaven Has Died
Maine State Police are Investigating the death of a child on the island of Vinalhaven.
A 1-Year-Old Child Was Found Unresponsive
The Knox County Sheriff's Office received a report Wednesday morning of an unresponsive child. Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says the 1-year-old was transported to Islands Community Medical Services on the island and, a short time later, State Police were notified that the child had died.
An autopsy was performed by the Chief Medical Examiner but further testing will need to be done to determine the cause and manner of death. The child's parents are cooperating with the investigation.
The Death is Under Investigation by the Maine State Police
Maine State Police are now investigating the death, as is standard protocol with the unattended death of a child. The police involvement does not suggest any suspicious activity.
There Have Been Three Child Deaths in the Past Month
This is the third unattended child death in Maine over the past few weeks. Police were called to a home in Biddeford on June 15th for a report of an unresponsive 1-month-old boy. The baby was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where they died on June 20th. Bangor Police were called to a Capehart residence on July 2nd for a report of an unresponsive infant. All three of these cases are being investigated by the Maine State Police.
