A Unity man is facing multiple charges, including OUI, for a fatal crash in Albion that also sent a woman to the hospital.

Where Was the Crash?

The charges against Stephen Bard, 51, of Unity stem from a crash on Friday, October 6th, in Albion. It was just after 3:00 in the afternoon when Bard's pickup truck collided with a van at the intersection of Unity and Belfast Roads.

A passenger in the van, Kandi L. Carrier, 38, of Rumford was taken to Northern Light Hospital in Waterville by LifeFlight, where she died of her injuries. The driver, a 46-year-old woman from Dixfield, was also taken via LifeFlight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she is still hospitalized.

Was Bard Arrested at the Crash Scene?

WGME-TV reports that witnesses told Deputies with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office that Bard had allegedly run off into the woods immediately after the crash. When the Deputies arrived, the truck's driver was nowhere to be found.

What Charges Does He Face?

Bard was arrested later at his home and taken into custody. He's charged with:

  • Operating under the influence resulting in death
  • Operating after suspension
  • Causing serious bodily injury or death while license is suspended
  • Aggravated leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

He was taken to the Kennebec County Jail and his bail was set at $3,500.
