Phones are one of the most commonly lost or stolen items at TSA checkpoints, with the agency reporting that 90,000 to 100,000 items are left behind each month.
Reader’s Digest continues that many of these so-called ‘lost’ items—especially phones and electronics—are likely stolen, while others are simply forgotten in the rush of gathering belongings.
You should always keep your phone tucked safely inside your personal item or carry-on when going through TSA security, rather than placing it in the bins.
According to the article from Reader’s Digest, today’s updated scanners allow agents to see inside bags more clearly, so phones don’t need to be removed, and only larger electronics like laptops or tablets usually have to come out.

And there you have it! Your cell phone is one item you should never put in security bins when going through TSA, according to TSA itself.
