With that in mind, if you’ve never heard of it, who is calling or comparing this spot in Maine to the Grand Canyon?
While Travel + Leisure by no means came up with this nickname, they recently spotlighted it in their article, “The ‘Grand Canyon of Maine’ Is a Hiker’s Dream — With Stunning Scenery and Waterfall Treks.” In it, they referred to the spot as a hidden gem in Maine, mostly known only to locals and in-the-know travelers.

Alright, now that we’ve covered that, where exactly is Travel + Leisure referring to when they talk about the ‘Grand Canyon’ of Maine?
Again, according to Travel + Leisure, Gulf Hagas is the place being compared to Arizona’s famous formation. In their article, “The ‘Grand Canyon of Maine’ Is a Hiker’s Dream — With Stunning Scenery and Waterfall Treks,” they wrote the following:
The beauty of Gulf Hagas is tucked in the remote woods of Maine, so there are some know-before-you-go essentials that will help ensure your adventure is a safe and memorable one.
A hidden gem tucked into the Appalachian Mountains, Gulf Hagas is where towering slate walls frame waterfalls, rapids, and pools along the Pleasant River.
Travel + Leisure continues by noting its remote location east of Moosehead Lake in the 100-Mile Wilderness, reminding visitors that a vehicle is necessary for the two-hour drive from Bangor and the rugged dirt roads leading in.

And there you have it! If you hadn’t heard of Gulf Hagas and its nickname before, you’ve learned something new today.
