This Frozen Lobster Meat from Maine Could Give You the Chills
The Food and Drug Administration reports a recall on some frozen lobster meat from Maine that could be contaminated with listeria.
Greenhead Lobster Products of Bucksport is recalling more than 5,700 pounds of frozen cooked lobster meat because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria can cause serious illness which may, in rare cases, be fatal to young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Most people, however, suffer short-term symptoms to include:
- High Fever and chills
- Severe headache
- Stiffness
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
The potentially contaminated products were sent to facilities in Maine and New Hampshire, where they were then shipped nationwide through wholesale distributors. Routine sampling by the company detected the organism, and the recall was issued. It's important to note that, to date, no one has reported becoming sick from this lobster meat. The affected products are listed on this chart from the Food and Drug Administration.
Anyone who has purchased products listed in this table is urged not to consume any of them, and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions can be directed to the Greenhead Lobster Company's customer service desk at 207-367-0950.
