Hotels are a booming business in Maine. Just drive through Portland and most of the new construction is hotels. According to Visit Portland, Greater Portland has over 6,000 hotel rooms and is also pulling in the big bucks. But what hotels are the biggest in Maine? Mainebiz compiled the largest hotels in Maine based on the number of guest rooms.

Bangor comes in with the 10th biggest hotel in Maine. With 208 rooms, they can accommodate travelers coming in to see a show, business people, or those just wanting to know more about the area.

The infamous round hotels. The claim to fame for this hotel (before it was a Doubletree) is that Elvis stayed here when it was the Sheraton in May 1977. He was scheduled to stay again in August of the same year - but it was not meant to be. He died the day before he was to perform at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

Cliff House has been around since 1872. It's gorgeous! It's near the huge sandy beach in Ogunquit and just over an hour north of Boston. The Cliff House stretches across 70 oceanfront acres on Bald Head Cliff. It overlooks the ocean and Nubble Lighthouse.

Built in 1988, this former Portland Marriot is now a Portland Sheraton. They made improvements to all 227 rooms. The logo is also new and improved. It's the first time in 40 years that Sheraton has had a logo change.

I have stayed at this great big hotel up at Sunday River. I've stayed in little rooms, and big kitchen murphy bed colossal rooms. Both are great with walk out to skiing. It's so much fun and the staff is spectacular. I have a soft spot in my heart for the 6th largest hotel in Maine.

Built in 1973 with a renovation in 2010, this used to be the place to stay when you were on a budget. With the explosion of hotels in Portland, the Holiday Inn by the Bay is now just as expensive as some of the boutique hotels in the Old Port. It's got an indoor pool and lots of rooms.

Since it first opened in 1978, Anchorage by the Sea has been a devoted family-run organization. Its start couldn't be more Maine. They broke ground and phase one occurred during the blizzard of 1978. They have through the decades changed, grown, and renovated to continue to offer a Maine experience like no other.

This is the epitome of Maine luxury. Gorgeous rooms, with a spa and marina, so you can bring your boat. You can get a room with a private balcony or go hog wild and get one with a full kitchen, hot tub, and gas fireplace. How nice would that be?

And drumroll please...there is a tie for first place between Bar Harbor and Portland.

If we held a business conference here, I'd actually want to go to one. They offer that or just a getaway from everyday life. The Regency (not to be confused with The Regency in Portland) is near the entrance of Acadia National Park and one mile from downtown Bar Harbor.
