As reported by News Center Maine on Tuesday, March 31st, Senator Susan Collins told a reporter off-camera that if she wins reelection, it will be her final term in the U.S. Senate.

Earlier, speaking on camera, Collins said her health remains strong and pointed to her nearly 10,000-vote record without missing a single vote as evidence of her energy and ability to continue serving.

On Wednesday, Collins's camp clarified her remark to the News Center Maine reporter.

"This was an offhand comment to a reporter, not a formal declaration," Collins' spokesperson Shawn Roderick said in a statement. "Maine has a once-in-a-century opportunity to re-elect the Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Senator Collins is focused on the work that she does for Maine, not the 2032 election."

Running for re-election at age 73, Collins would be 74 when a new term begins next January and 80 years old by the end of that term.

Meanwhile, one of her potential opponents, term-limited Governor Janet Mills, 78, has acknowledged that age is a factor but says she remains in good health and capable of serving.
