A Driver Was Distracted Before Hitting a School Bus in Orrington

No one was hurt when an SUV rear-ended a school bus on Route 15 in Orrington.

When Was This?

Members of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene of the crash at approximately 7:30 Monday morning. When they arrived, they found an SUV and a school bus. The bus contained the driver and one student.

What Happened?

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash indicate that the SUV's driver was traveling in the same direction as the bus, when they became distracted by one of the children in their own vehicle. When the bus stopped, the driver failed to see it in time and hit the bus from behind.

Was Anyone Hurt?

No one from either vehicle was hurt in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Officials are reminding drivers that it is imperative that they pay attention whenever they're behind the wheel. Sheriff's Department officials say a large percentage of all traffic crashes are caused by distracted drivers. Distractions are defined as anything that takes the driver's attention off the road, including talking or texting on the phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in the vehicle, or fiddling with the radio/entertainment/navigation system.

The names of the people involved have not been released.
