Rumford Man In Shooting Incident Charged With Attempted Murder
A man suspected of running his vehicle into his neighbor's house, setting fire to it, and then shooting at people is charged with attempted murder.
Rumford Man Faces Multiple Charges Including Attempted Murder and Arson
Billy Morvent, 59, of Rumford is charged with three counts of aggravated attempted murder, one count of Arson, three counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, and one count of aggravated criminal mischief.
Police Say Morvent Allegedly Fired a Gun Into a House He Had Set on Fire
The State Fire Marshal's Office arrested Morvent for the incident that they were called to investigate on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. They assisted the Rumford Fire Department with a structure fire at 61 State Route 232, but the fire was only part of that bizarre evening.
Rumford Police were called to an active shooter situation at approximately 8:00 that night at the address in Rumford Corner Village. When officers arrived, they found that Morvent had crashed his vehicle into a neighbor's home before allegedly setting the house on fire. Officials say that Morvent had allegedly fired several rounds into the residence and in the area before leaving the scene on foot. Residents were advised to shelter-in-place until the suspect could be taken into custody.
The Rumford Suspect Remains Hospitalized After Shooting Himself
Authorities caught up to Morvent at approximately 1:00 the next morning and found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was arrested this week. Morvent is expected to make his first court appearance via video conferencing today.
