Richmond Fatal Accident Likely Caused by Texting While Driving
State Police say a driver who died in a single-vehicle crash in Richmond on Sunday was likely texting while behind the wheel.
Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the accident happened around 9:30 Sunday night, along Interstate 295 in Richmond. 22-year-old Antonio Martinez died in the crash. Martinez lived in Waterville and was a student at Thomas College.
Troopers say it appears Martinez lost control of the truck in the northbound lane, between the Richmond and Gardiner exits, causing it to overturn several times before coming to rest off the breakdown lane. A passerby discovered the accident at around 4:30 Monday morning. Police say Martinez was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown through the windshield, as the vehicle overturned. He died at the scene.
Police do not believe speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
