This amazing mansion in Richmond that was a wedding gift to the original owner's son in 1888 has old world elegance in every room.

What's the History of the House?

Once I started reading the realtor.com listing for this incredible mansion, I was hooked immediately. I love history, houses, and weddings, and this house has all that and more. The smaller portion of the house, built in 1870 was bought by Maine shipping magnate T.J. Southard. He built the mansion, attached to that house, and gave it to his son as a wedding gift in 1888.

Does It Have a Lot of the Original Features?

While the building has undergone multiple renovations, over the past 130+ years, there are many historical elements to the home. One of the bathrooms has an antique tub with a toilet that's so old I think I'd be afraid to sit on it. Another bathroom has the original tin roof that translates down the walls. So cool. As I looked through the pictures, I could imagine women in crinolines, long dresses, and huge hats and men with handlebar mustaches and spats.

But maybe the most interesting part of this mansion is the turret and the rooms it contains. The top floor of the turret offers views of Swan Island, the Kennebec River and Bridge, and more. I can just imagine how different the views must have been back in 1888, when the house was new.

How Much Is It?

This stunning mansion is listed on realtor.com by Sarah Nielsen of Keller Williams Realty Greater Portland for $695,000. That includes the .38 acre lot right on Main Street in Richmond. I've gushed enough about how much I love this house. Check out the photos and you'll see for yourself that this is truly a gem of a property with endless potential, including a peek back to another century.
