Remains May Belong to Missing Appalachian Trail Hiker

The Maine Warden Service says skeletal remains discovered recently are likely those of an Appalachian Trail hiker who went missing two years ago.

Warden Corporal John MacDonald said in a press release today that skeletal remains discovered in Redington Township on Wednesday, October 14th are likely those of Geraldine Largay, an Appalachian Trailer hiker missing since July 22, 2013. Positive identification will be determined in the coming weeks by the Medical Examiner's Office. However, MacDonald says, due to the location of the remains and evidence gathered at the scene, the Maine Warden Service feels confident that Geraldine has now been located.

Largay was 66 years old went she failed to arrive at the Route 27 crossing, where her husband was waiting to meet her. Extensive searches over the past two years have failed to turn up any sign of the woman nicknamed 'Inchworm.'

A press conference about the discovery is planned for this afternoon in Augusta.
