Police Continue to Search for Robert Burton – Urge Caution from Mainers

The Piscataquis County Sheriff's Office has issued an update on the search for accused murderer Robert Burton, saying there's still no sign of the man accused of killing his former girlfriend. While D.A. Chris Almy details Burton's lengthy and violent criminal history, police urge Mainers to be vigilant.

Burton has been missing since before his former girlfriend's body was found by her children in their Parkman home. Stephanie Gebo and Burton had lived there together until they broke up, a week before her murder. Piscataquis County District Attorney Christopher Almy told the BDN that this fits with a pattern of behavior Burton has exhibited in the past. When he was 23, Almy told the BDN that Burton was arrested on domestic violence charges for threatening to kill an ex-girlfriend. While out on bail, he jumped in her car and threatened her again.

Then, shortly after getting out of prison on the charges, he armed himself with a rifle, broke into the woman's family's camp, hid in the bathroom, and waited for her to show up. When her Mother arrived first, Burton choked the woman and threatened her life.

Police continue to urge Mainers to use caution as they go about their everyday activities, keeping their houses and cars locked. But now, they've added a warning to be smart if it appears someone has broken in. Residents who find evidence that someone may have illegally entered their home or camp are advised not to go in. Call police immediately and let them investigate. Burton is considered armed and dangerous.
