Maine Wrong-Way Driver Was Killed in a Head-On Crash On I-95
Maine State Police say a Corinna man is dead after traveling the wrong way on I-95 and colliding head-on with a pickup truck.
Maine Police Have Identified the Drivers in the I-95 Crash
Maine State Police Lieutenant Aaron Turcotte says the driver who died in the crash has been identified as Ivan Cunningham, 82, of Corinna. His vehicle collided with a pickup truck driven by Nathaniel Blanchard, 27, of Stetson.
Troopers Were On Their Way to Intercept the Driver When the Crash Happened
Police began taking calls about a wrong-way driver on I-95 at approximately 11:00 Tuesday morning. The callers said a driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lane near mile 142 in Burnham. As Troopers were on their way to intercept the wrong-way driver, they received a report of a head-on crash at mile 147 in Pittsfield.
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash indicate that Mr. Cunningham was driving his 2013 Ford Focus northbound in the southbound lane when he struck a 2023 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Mr. Blanchard, head-on. Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene while Blanchard was flown via Life Flight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
I-95 Was Shut Down for About Two Hours
Southbound traffic was diverted at Exit 150 while police investigated the crash. The southbound lanes were closed for about two hours.
Our condolences to Mr. Cunningham's family and friends.
