After more than 40 years in business, the owners of the Wiswell Farm Greenhouse in Orrington are calling it a career.

Is This The Place With The Huge Mural?

The Wiswell Farm is hard to miss, as you enter Orrington on the River Road, also known as Route 15. There's the big white farmhouse, the small piece of white picket fencing, and the huge historic white barn. On the side of the barn is an 80-foot mural of the town's history, celebrating its bicentennial. Ask anyone who visits Orrington and that's likely the first thing they'll mention. That barn, by the way, was built in 1872, and the farmhouse has been home to 9 generations of the Wiswell family. It's the only residence that's still occupied by descendants of the town's original settlers.

For the past 41 years, the farm has also been home to the Wiswell Farm Greenhouse, supplying quality flowers, plants, and vegetables to people from around the area. Co-owner Jody Decesere says it's been a labor of love.

Touching bases with our regulars and meeting new people is the heart of this business. The challenge of being a grower and then being able to offer a wide range of plants and vegetables to our customers was one of the great perks of our job!

Why Are They Closing the Business?

But now, Jody and her husband Vince have decided it's time to retire. She told me they will miss the customers and, especially their coworkers.

Our days were filled with work but we spent a lot of that time laughing and just having a good time. We'd all worked together for several years and that absence alone will make for a big hole in our lives next Spring.

The family will continue to live on the farm and is planning to sell off the structures and the inventory of the greenhouse. While the business is closed, Jody says they will continue to put out their awesome holiday displays, including the Christmas lights that greet people as they drive into town. If you haven't seen the Halloween skeletons riding the tractor, you have to check it out in a few weeks.

What Do the Owners Want to Say to Their Customers?

As the sun sets on the Greenhouse business, I asked Jody what she'd like to say to the residents of Orrington, who have enjoyed having the Wiswell Farm Greenhouse and its owners as part of the business community.

We would like to give a heartfelt 'Thank You!' Our solid base started here over 40 years ago and it has continued right here in this community. The growth of our business has been directly related to that support. And so, it's a bittersweet goodbye to our greenhouse business and our wonderful coworkers and customers.

Jody and Vince, I think I speak for the residents of Orrington when I wish you both well in your retirement. We'll miss your business, but it's a well-deserved rest.
