Motorcycle Crash on the Closed I-395 Extension in Eddington

Officials say a man with a suspended license crashed his motorcycle while traveling on the closed, unfinished portion of I-395 in Eddington.

Officials Say People Have Been Ignoring the 'Closed' Signs on the Unfinished Road

Penobscot County Sheriff's Officials did not give the man's name but did reveal that he was out on bail and had a suspended license. The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office has been getting complaints of vehicles traveling on the closed portion of the new I-395 extension from Brewer to Eddington. That portion of the road isn't finished and has not yet been opened to traffic, but drivers have ignored the signs.

A Deputy Spotted the Motorcycle in a Restricted Area

On Thursday night, at approximately 8 pm, a deputy was on routine patrol when he saw a lone street motorcycle heading west on the closed road at a high rate of speed. When the deputy activated his lights, the motorcyclist took off at a higher rate of speed. As the motorcycle approached a dirt portion of the unfinished road, the deputy turned off his lights, but the motorcyclist continued until it turned left onto a closed portion of the road.

The Driver Was Not Seriously Hurt

The motorcycle's brakes locked up as it reached a blocked portion of the road near Route 9 in Eddington and tipped over, causing the driver to fall. Even though he was not wearing a helmet, he only received minor cuts. The 36-year-old man, whose identity was not revealed by the sheriff's office, was taken to a local hospital for a routine evaluation. Officials say speed and alcohol were factors in the incident.

Penobscot County Sheriff's is reminding residents that the new I-395 extension road is closed to the public. This means that motorists, recreational vehicles, and pedestrians should not be using the well-marked road which contains barriers and 'closed road' signs.
