On February 24th, President Trump delivered his 2026 State of the Union address, which became the longest in American history at one hour and 47 minutes.
During his remarks, Trump urged lawmakers to stand if they agreed that the government’s first responsibility is to protect American citizens over those in the country illegally, creating a moment that highlighted partisan differences in the chamber. Democrats remained seated while many Republicans stood and applauded, and Trump later addressed the response by criticizing Democrats for not standing.

In response, Mills said that after listening to the President’s lengthy remarks, she believes Maine needs a senator who will stand up, push back, and provide stronger leadership.
She added that she is confident she has the experience and determination needed to fight for the state and get results.
Before the November general election, Mills must first compete in a crowded Democratic primary in June.
This is where progressive oyster farmer Graham Platner has emerged as one of her most prominent challengers. A new University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll found Platner holding a significant lead over Mills, 64% to 26%, with 6% of respondents undecided or unsure.

And there you have it! Governor Mills has responded to President Trump’s State of the Union address, saying she is the person who can ‘stand up’ to him and ‘fight back.’
