A Maine Warden Service K9 was able to track down a severely hypothermic woman who got lost while walking her dog.

When Did Her Family First Realize She Was Missing?

Maine Warden Mark Latti says Helen Baillie, 65, left her home to take her black lab out for a walk in the woods behind her home off the Arundel Road in Kennebunkport at around 7:00 Wednesday evening. Helen's husband became concerned, about a half hour later, when he was told that someone had located the dog about a half mile from their home, but there was no sign of his wife. He immediately called 911 and told the Kennebunkport Police that his wife was missing.

How Was She Found?

When local police couldn't find Helen, they called in the Maine Warden Service. Game Wardens were able to determine the GPS coordinates and approximate location of Helen's phone. When Wardens Emerson Duplissie-Cyr and Tyler Harhart found the phone in the woods, approximately 500 yards from the house, they searched the immediate area but still couldn't find her. At this point, they brought in a Warden K9 unit to help.

Game Warden Chad Robertson and K9 Storm began searching in the general area where the cell phone was located a little before midnight. It was about 15 minutes later when K9 Storm scented Helen in the air and found her, about 100 yards away from where the phone was found, and over 500 yards from the house.

What Condition Was She In When the Wardens Found Her?

Officials say Helen had taken off some of her clothes and she was soaked from walking through the boggy woods. She was shaking vigorously from the cold, as temperatures Wednesday night were in the low 40's. Helen was disoriented and had difficulty speaking.

Game Warden Robertson gave her his shirt and Game Warden Harhart gave her his jacket, as they assisted her in walking out of the woods. She was taken to a waiting Kennebunkport Fire/EMS ambulance, where she was warmed up and then taken to the hospital for further examination.
